Nanoemulsion as a Vitamin E Acetate Carrier to Enhance Infiltration into Oral Mucous Membrane

The infiltration of vitamin E acetate contained in phopholipid nanoemulsions was investigated with hamster cheek pouch. Introduction of oils with extremely low water-solubility and low viscosity induced narrow droplet size distribution and smaller mean droplet size of nanoemulsions containing vitamin E acetate, while nanoemulsions of vitamin E acetate alone were unstable. Freeze-fracture electron microscopy revealed that droplet size of nanoemulsions were in the range of 50 ~ 200 nm and their structures were maintained in toothpaste formulation as an oral composition. In vitro and in vivo assessments indicated that nanoemulsions and oral compositions containing the same facilitated the infiltration of vitamin E acetate into oral mucous membrane of hamster cheek pouches.
